Nestled in the crater of an extinct volcano, this small village surrounded by dense green rainforest is interesting for its history, indigenous culture, and legends even though it remains overshadowed by Levuka the colonial town. The inhabitants of Lovoni are considered the first settlers of the island to migrate from Viti Levu. A respected people, the Europeans even considered them to be the predominant leaders of the island. Hostile to the settlers, they burned down the town of Levuka twice in order to repel any form of evangelization and occupation of their lands and the Lovoni people were one of the last peoples of Fiji to be subjugated.
