Toberua Island owes its name to a Fijian legend. Long ago, a young girl washed up on the island after a long journey by bamboo raft from the Lau archipelago. She wore two ponytails, which meant she was still a virgin. She was taken in by a young fisherman from Bau who had come to catch turtles. He instantly fell madly in love with her and took her with him to marry her. In memory of the love born on the island and the lost girl, the island was given the name "Tobe Rua", meaning "two horse tails".
