20 km north of Suva lies the village of Nausori and the Suva-Nausori international airport. The village was largely developed in the late 19th century, with the establishment of Fiji's second largest sugarcane distillery, which remained in operation until 1959. The municipality of Nausori, one of the largest in Fiji, has a population of around 32,000, but is not a tourist attraction. A short 20-minute drive from Nausori, a small pier, Bau Landing, provides access to the islands of Leleuvia (transfer is usually arranged with the hotel on the island) and Bau.
