On the N6 towards Dublin, between the towns of Loughrea and Ballinasloe, the village of Aughrim is planted with signs recalling the various sites of the battle of the same name. A battle that saw the victory of the Protestant William of Orange over the Catholic James II in 1691. To learn more about this bloody conflict, in which 7,000 soldiers lost their lives, visit the Battle of Aughrim Interpretive Center. The formidably well-preserved Franciscan monastery of Kilconnell Friary is 7 kilometers north-west of the town. A silent and impressive stopover.
