Mountshannon is both a village in the east of the county and the name of a parish. It lies on the shores of Lough Derg, the second largest lake in the Republic of Ireland. It promises a pleasant stop off the beaten track, but is also historically rich thanks to Holy Island. To get there, head for the harbour, home to numerous fishing boats and tourist yachts. There's also a swimming area. As for Holy Island, one of the lake's islands, its monastic ruins are among Ireland's most famous. A very pleasant little getaway.
