Really picturesque village located on the banks of Loch Deirgeirt, surrounded by hills and mountains. Over the river passes an old stone bridge which completes the picture. Killaloe is the starting point for many cruises on the Shannon River. It is also the birthplace of a great king of Ireland, Brian Boru (940-1041), the ancestor of the O'Brien clan, who subdued the Vikings. Killaloe and its surroundings allow to discover the history of the arrival of Christianity and the development of the monastic tradition in Ireland, as well as the increasing role of the Shannon river as a transport route since the most ancient times.
