Founded in 1722, Den Gyldene Freden, meaning Golden Peace, is a true institution, owned by the Swedish Academy which selects the Nobel Prize for Literature. If you want to eat cheaply but differently from the classic budget restaurants, stop by Kornhamnstorg to try a local classic. A white wagon with a yellow fish-shaped sign, formerly located in Södermalm, sells fried herring in all kinds of sauces: rolled in bread with a salad with fresh cream and leeks (for 100 SEK), as a burger (75 SEK) or "à la scanienne" (60 SEK): herring fillets with a mustard sauce, red onion and dill. Exotic and delicious!

One of the most famous burgers in town, just steps away from Stureplan! The meat is cooked to your liking, the nachos are covered with quality melted cheese and the fries are crispy as can be! You can choose from a wide range of flavors, accompanied by a beer or a cocktail. Enough to make the Americans blush! For vegetarians, the meat on all burgers can be replaced by halloumi cheese. Good to know: if you come for lunch during the week, they offer you coffee or tea at the end of the meal!

This green-painted wooden establishment has stood opposite Skansen's main entrance since 1866. The Café Fin de Siècle is the least expensive part of the building. You can eat inside, beneath countless black-and-white photos tracing the history of the establishment or Djurgården, or on the convivial terrace, often packed with tourists when the weather's fine. The place is especially appreciated for its picturesque atmosphere - there's nothing more Swedish than that! The menu always includes meat and fish of the day - highly recommended!

This 19th century style restaurant is housed in an old building (rare enough to note) on Södermalm. Pelikan's history dates back to the 17th century and it moved to Beklingegatan in 1960. The clientele today is still a mixture of what it was over the centuries: workers, students, middle-class people live together in this place, under a 5 m high ceiling. The food is typically Swedish with herrings, anchovies, smoked reindeer or the traditional köttbollar (meatballs) with cranberries. A very busy place.

Of course, a Frenchman doesn't necessarily want to eat Breton pancakes when he comes to visit Stockholm. But this little local crêperie is well located and represents a cheap and pleasant alternative for a nice dinner. Four steps lead up to this haunt of French expats and Swedish lovers of good crepes. The atmosphere is lively and the light is subdued in the two small rooms with a rustic decor. Pastel brown walls, candles on the tables, lists of drinks on blackboards, sober decoration and the smell of garlic and wheat.

From the street, the B.A.R. restaurant stands out for its simplicity and its uncluttered front. Inside, you'll find a cheerful seafood brasserie where locals like to take a gastronomic break. There's the traditional salmon, oysters, lobster, offering gigantic platters of seafood to be enjoyed with a good champagne. All the ingredients are fresh and the menu is calibrated throughout the year, according to the seasons. A true gem of Nordic cuisine not to be missed! Also offers take-out.

We cannot miss the lesson: a large wrought iron key the name of the establishment. Magnus Ladulås, régent of the Kingdom of Sweden between 1275 and 1290, was the son of the founder of Stockholm, Birger Jarl. This small café-restaurant is one of the most popular in the old town, frequented in part by the gay community. It mixes students, tourists and lovers of good hot chocolate, muffins and crispy sandwiches. Chokladkoppen is pleasant in all seasons: in winter it is noisy and warm inside and in summer the terrace is beautifully situated on the most beautiful square in Gamla Stan. Simple dishes such as spinach pies, vegetarian lasagne or chicken curry are also served here.

The "rear pocket" of the Opera has been in existence for over forty years. Very popular, this micro-restaurant offers traditional Swedish cuisine. You will eat sitting around the U-desk or on the few small tables. The atmosphere is quite chic while remaining sympathetic.

Hotel Glashus is also famous for its restaurant, which offers Swedish cuisine with delicate dishes, all in a unique setting. Depending on the season and availability, you can enjoy reindeer as well as all kinds of fish caught off the Nordic coast. Inside Östermalms Saluhall, a building dating back to 1888, the Husmans Deli is a place of pilgrimage and gastronomic discovery. Convenient for sampling charcuterie and discovering a selection of smoked meats over a glass of red wine. Refined selection of cheeses and meats in the form of tapas. It has always been the place to be for gourmets who come to stock up on delicatessen products from Sweden and elsewhere. Go there alone or with friends for a good time guaranteed!

This café-pastry has been set on the main pedestrian street of the old town. Good dishes at prices still a little higher than the previous ones, a warm atmosphere very «stockholmienne», a large room with a ceiling covered of wood, a good quality piano… all under the mural portrait of Queen Christina.

A little away from the island of Södermalm, this quality French restaurant (ask Patrick, the boss) is just opposite the Pelikan. He displays a newspaper article on the entrance door where the 4-star note is given by culinary critics.

The hotel is close to Odengatan and has excellent sandwiches with coffee. Red brick walls and broken arches create an old style to break the brand new, compelling chrome coffee machine.

In the heart of the old town, a restaurant in a vaulted cellar of the th century. Under brick arches lit by old oil lamps, wooden benches covered with cushions, tables and dark wood chairs are small alveoli for candlelight meals. In the centre of the room, the hors d'oeuvres (hams, salads, crustaceans and sausages) are presented in a hull of excavated boats where you can use the will. On a table at the bottom of the room, the home-made Swedish cracottes, knäckebröd, are alignées. Diana serves traditional Swedish dishes from the sea and forest, grills and fish that can be accompanied by a gigantic oven cooked in the oven which is eaten with butter and salt. Reindeer steak sauce morille, salmon spicy sauce tartar and perfect to cranberries are some of the gastronomic curiosities of the place. You can also try Swedish classic dishes such as viande meat or herring.

You will visit the Frog (Grodan), which nests in the district of Östermalm, the "Petit Paris", if your concern is to see or be seen. In a word, it's here that you can meet well-known people! French cuisine and terrace.

In winter, meals are served in the impressive red brick building that used to be Alfred Nobel's factory. In summer, you can sit on the picnic tables outside, just a stone's throw from the lake! Children are welcome here and it is a very popular place for young couples with their strollers and toddlers. A very pleasant and family atmosphere.

Woodstockholm Bistro is a place where flavors meet without regard to traditional boundaries. Facing the Södra Teatern, in the lively district of Södermalm. Enjoy locally produced food and drinks in a warm environment created by Lars Stensö. Chef Elias and his team work with a regularly changing menu. In the evenings, the adjoining furniture store is transformed into a room, a spectacular room designed by Uglycute and connected to Woodstockholm Bistro by a secret passage.

This small restaurant surfs on the street-food fashion, by declining dishes around poultry, hence the name, Bird. From the duck confit burger, to the buttermilk fried chicken, or the peanut wings, your taste buds and your pupils will be comforted. Young team, very pleasant and dynamic atmosphere, the products are fresh and produced on a small scale in a farm near Trollhättan. Tasty food and reasonable prices. Cocktail and beer menu. Very busy establishment.

Put a chef of good repute, an award winning bartender, a Norwegian hotelier, Swedish sake sommeliers, shake up the concept and you get the right mix to create Stockholm's current hotspot, Tak! We clearly go there for the view of the city which is exceptional as it is a rooftop located on top of a brutalist architecture hotel, in the heart of the city, a few steps from Sergels Torg. Very good choice of drinks, from Japanese yuzu lager to sparkling sake and Eurasian cocktails. The star of the menu: the fish!

Some of Sweden's top restaurateurs such as Magnus Nilsson, Adam Dahlberg and Albin Wessman, Stefano Catenacci and Nobel pastry chef Daniel Roos share the space and the 250 seats. At Teatern, you can enjoy world-class sausages, vegan burgers, and food from around the world. Unpretentious, the place allows foodies to eat on the go at a reasonable price.

Discreetly located on Ringvägen, Södermalm's longest street, it's easy to pass by this "Little Café of Söder" without noticing it. This would be a great mistake, however, because when you push open the door of this modest stall, you discover an extremely welcoming place. This restaurant, literally, the "cellar of the city hall", attracts us especially for its prestigious atmosphere and its luxurious airs. It offers a grandiose decor, between Italian baroque and national romanticism. Beautiful silverware, chandeliers, impeccable service... For those who want to splurge, there is the Nobel menu, a replica of the formula served on the day of the famous prize... For something less pretentious, you can simply try the lunch formula, which is much less expensive and of very good quality.

Opened in 1910, it is one of the oldest cafés in Stockholm. A nice address, where the large choice of salads is worth it: chicken-mango, Caesar salad, shrimps, goat... You can also find hot dishes, mixed plates and pastries. The products are fresh and the service is fast. The interior is rather classic but pleasant, with its big benches along the walls and a touch of retro decoration. In summer, a narrow terrace allows to enjoy the animation of St Eriksgatan. In a beautiful property overlooking Djugårdslätten, this large restaurant has a very large dining room, in baroque style, which seems like a setting from the Swedish past. The garden, where the statue of the artist Carl Bellman playing the mandolin is planted, allows you to relax in the deckchairs and digest in the shade. In this late ^19th century villa is this chic and refined restaurant, where Swedish culinary craftsmanship is served in beautiful surroundings. It's not cheap, but it's worth it. You'll find rib steak, cod, herring, and breathtaking desserts. The presentation is impeccable and the atmosphere is folkloric. If you are there around the Christmas vacations, this restaurant offers a Christmas menu from November onwards which is delicious, and Christmas is no joke for the Swedes...

After a busy day visiting Djurgården's museums, come and relax in this new restaurant, which opened in May 2023. Located just beyond Skansen, it's well worth the trip. The setting is simply stunning, right on the water with a breathtaking view. The decor is rather original, with numerous boats hanging from the ceiling. We appreciate the finesse of the dishes and their Nordic influences. There's something for everyone on the menu: meat, fish and vegetarian dishes.

It is in Årsta, about twenty minutes by transport from Södermalmn that nestles Två Små Svin, an atypical restaurant with Danish and Czech influences, specialized in smørrebrød, beer and brandy. The smørrebrød is a typical Danish dish which consists of a slice of buttered rye bread on which one comes to arrange various foods. The place is only frequented by locals. One of our small hidden addresses, far from the restaurants of the city center.
