Located 75 kilometers west of Man, this city is very close to the borders of Liberia and Guinea. Its population of nearly 70,000 is made up of indigenous Dan (or Yacoubas), Malinke, Burkinabe and Guineans. The war in neighboring Liberia in the 1990s brought its share of refugees to the region. Nestled in a dense forest, in a landscape of rice paddies, it is known for beautiful liana bridges crossing the Cavally at Drongouineu (14 km south of Danané), Lieupleu (22 km south) - the best known - and Vatouo (30 km south)
