This large city in western Côte d'Ivoire in the heart of the mountain region has a population of about 190,000, mostly Wés and Guérés, between Man in the north, Daloa in the east, the Taï forest in the south and the Liberian border in the west. It is here that a massacre will take place in 2011, as part of the horrors of war. According to Red Cross estimates, at least 800 people have lost their lives, mostly Guerés. UNOCI has blamed both the pro-Gbagbo and pro-Ouattara camps. Today, it is essentially a road traffic junction of no tourist interest, but the entrance to the Taï park is not far away via Guiglo, it is a good stop on the road before going there early in the morning (count 3 hours of road and bush track to get to the park entrance). There are good hotels to spend the night there, more than in Guiglo which is only 40 minutes away by car. Might as well stop in this larger town with more options. Same if you leave the park and plan to go either to Abidjan or to Man sot in Yamoussoukro
