Slagelse was a very important trading town in the 11th century and still has a church from that period. Nearby, the site of Trelleborg is one of seven Viking castles discovered in 2014. The storyteller Hans Christian Andersen, who lived there for several years during his youth, described it as a "nuisance". This modern village is now very lively, with shopping centers and nice cafes. Nearby are golf courses, beautiful beaches and plenty of countryside to enjoy. You can also take a ferry from Skælskør, south of Slagelse, to the islands of Agersø and Omø.
