This small town of 21,300 inhabitants is home to a well-preserved fortress dating from the 14th and 16th centuries, with a still-enclosed perimeter wall and eight towers. These ramparts surround two churches: one Calvinist (15th-16th century), rather massive, the other Lutheran, more recent (19th century). At the heart of the fortress is a small history museum. 25 km north of Aiud is the renowned spa town of Ocna Mureş (salt lakes).
