The waters of this spa, set in a magnificent landscape, were already known to the Dacians. But its main source, Căciulata 1, was discovered in 1830. Napoleon III regularly purchased bottles of Călimăneşti water. A victim of its own success, the village has been somewhat blighted by Communist-era hotels. Older ones, like the Hotel Central, all white with little turrets, are still there, bearing witness to a prestigious past. The best time to visit is the first week of August, when the town comes alive with the Olt Folklore Festival and its pottery market.
