Mooretown is one of the last strongholds of the Maroons - along with those of Accompong (south of Cockpit Country) and Charles Town (Buff Bay). These former slaves who escaped from the plantations and rebelled against the English settlers they fought for many years, left behind them a tradition that is still alive, especially in Mooretown. The village still benefits from legislation inherited from old historical treaties that gave the Maroons a semblance of autonomy and some material and fiscal advantages. Thus, the Maroons do not pay taxes on their land, bequeathed by Nanny, a historical figure of the resistance... The village is run by a captain, chief of the Maroons, assisted by a council of elected officials. The traditional language, originally from West Africa, which is said to have been inherited from the Yorubas in Nigeria today, is now a distant memory and little remains of the old African traditions
