Located in the mountainous massif of Bururi dominating the city to the west, this reserve created by the colonizers houses a mountain rain forest at altitudes of 1 700 to 2 307 m (Mount Bururi). The mountain forest, which once occupied two-thirds of the total park area (3 000 ha), now covers only one third. For flora and fauna, this forest has strong similarities with that of Kibira, as it also connects with the system of the Congo-Nile Ridge. However, its ancient isolation from Kibira and its less humid climate led to its particularisation: there are fewer faunistique varieties, but a different botanical species (a total of 250 plant species, the rarest of which lie in ravines and in the Siguvyaye valley). The flora. Here you can see bamboo (Dracaena afromontana) of the manils (Symphonia globulifera) at the spectacular scarlet flowering, and in the denser parts of the forest of albizias (Albizia gummifera), wild banana trees (Ensete ventricosum) and yellow flowering shrubs called umurerabana (Bersama abyssinica). The fauna includes monkeys (cercopithèques) and several species of carnivores. The Léopard intruder, the leopard (ingwe in kirundi), appears that the animal has now disappeared (its skin is used for decorative purposes).Birds are numerous and represent one of the park's main attractions: there are more than 117 species, some endemic. In abundance, there are brown poitrine (Alethe poliocephala), which are hardly seen elsewhere, and the Livingstone touracos (Tauraco livingstonii).Snakes, also in legion, are close to the species of Kibira.
