43 km north of Bujumbura and 40 km south of Masango, at the time the RN 9 joins the RN 10, Bubanza is located at the meeting of the Northern Imbo and the Mirwa Mountains which form the dominant landforms of the province of which it is the head-place (at 1 062 m altitude). As capital of Northern Imbo, it gained its urbanized agglomération from the colonial era, but it suffered greatly from the war of the 1990-2000 s, and again from the political crisis that followed the elections in 2010. Today, it is still a bit like a disaster town. The agglomeration, exploded over several hills, includes structures and equipment that correspond to its regional importance (hospital, schools and technical establishments, a very lively market) and is well stocked by the Regideso (only water can sometimes fail, especially in the lower market areas). But its growth suffers from the insecurity that often appears to be a lot heavier in that region than elsewhere. The diocese is central in the city, with fewer dependencies than in Gitega or Ruyigi, but rather symmetrical.A break can be foreseen in the day in Bubanza from Bujumbura. The population is very friendly and curious for visitors, especially as there are few.
