Eisenach, a pretty little town near the former border between the two Germanys, has a very rich history, it is famous in the fields of music, politics, industry and religion. It is the birthplace of Johann Sebastian Bach, born in 1685. August Bebel and Wilhelm Liebknecht founded the German Social Democratic Party there in 1869. East German Wartburg cars were built there. The factories were then taken over by the Opel vehicle brand. Finally, Wartburg Castle, one of Germany's most famous castles, served as Luther's refuge after his excommunication in 1551, which forced him into exile. For ten months he translated the New Testament into German. In this way, he made a significant contribution to the popularization of the written German language. This sumptuous monument was rediscovered by Goethe and the German Romantics. They made it a neomedieval temple glorifying Germanic myths. In 1817, Burschenschaft, a liberal-national student corporation, was created there. She was challenging the conservative aristocratic regime. Its black, red and gold colours became those of the German flag. This fascinating castle, a true national sanctuary, alone traces one of the most important chapters in German history. It's worth the trip. Eisenach is also a charming city where it is good to live and walk. Nestled at the foot of the hills, it stretches in the heart of a wooded countryside that rightly attracts many hikers and cyclists.
