Access by train (direct link) or by car: 60 km from Halle, about 55 min drive. The train station is a little north-east of the centre, 500 m from the cathedral. Naumburg is the most beautiful small town in southern Saxony-Anhalt, which is also the most tourist. Overlooking the Saale-Unstrut valleys, proud of its past of important bishopric, it has a colourful, atmospheric old town rich in architecture (mainly Renaissance), and has one of Germany's most important cathedrals. Nietzsche lived there and attended the college of Naumburg. The city is concentrated in two important areas: The cathedral, outside the historic centre (Domplatz), and two steps the "Ratsstadt", the old pedestrian town which stretches around the traditional market square, the charming Markt. It is bordered by the bourgeois Renaissance houses of the Saxon Renaissance, with their ornate and colourful chandeliers. The largest of them, known as Hohe Lilie, at the end of the Herrenstrasse on the market. The Hotel de Ville Renaissance is remarkable; its cellar-hostel is all time. During the season, we strongly advise to have a drink on this spacious paved square, the best way to admire the architecture. Near the Topfmarkt, the late Gothic church St. Wenzel, which contains two paintings from Cranach the Old. Stroll through the adjacent streets, Jakobstrasse, Holzmarkt, Jakobsgasse, Wenzelstrasse… The atmosphere is rather romantic.
