Jena, Jena in German, is now a medium-sized city, university; it is with Erfurt the most dynamic city in Thuringia. City of the th century intellectuals, city of history, it was heavily destroyed during the war and its current facies hovers between elegant legacies of the past, strong socialist realism and interesting contemporary architectural trials. Despite a certain lack of harmony, the city does not lack charm, especially as it is built on the hillside in the green valley of Saale and is imbued with a very pleasant student atmosphere. Its university, founded in 1558, was one of the largest in Europe in the th century. Capital of a principality Saxony-Jena, then a major city of the Duchy of Saxony-Weimar, the city was one of the bastions of the Enlightenment culture in the th century, under the pen of the illustrious philosophers who made its fame in the th century, Goethe, Schiller, Hegel or Feuerbach. We will also remember the famous battle of the Napoleonic wars which gave its name to a metro station in Paris: it was here in the autumn of 1806 that the French army allah the most severe Prussian army of its defeats: 30 000 Germans died at the time. It was a trauma to the entire country and the scar put a century and a half to close. Jena was also a cradle of optical mechanics, founded in 1880 by Carl Zeiss. The manufacture lasted until the end of the GDR, establishing for a time the prosperity of the city… After the dismantling of the factories and thousands of redundancies, the Zeiss workshops are currently undergoing restructuring.
