Schwerin, the elegant capital of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and the Land's second-largest city, is eclectic and rich in monuments, such as the famous and superb Schloss-Residenz. It is beautifully situated on the banks of the Schweriner See and Pfaffenteich, and boasts 12 lakes, reminding us of its Nordic face at every turn. With 100,000 inhabitants, Schwerin is Germany's smallest state capital. Its castle is the city's main attraction, and an excellent one at that. The lake, the eccentric garden and the eclectic building are a good reason to spend an afternoon in Schwerin, or even an overnight stay. In 1018, a Slavic stronghold was first mentioned, which was already located on the island where the castle was built. In 1160, Henry the Lion, Duke of Saxony, founded Schwerin. Shortly afterwards, the town became the seat of the bishopric and county of Schwerin, and grew to become the cultural capital of Mecklenburg in the 16th century. After a less successful period, during which the court of the Grand Dukes of Mecklenburg was transferred to Ludwiglust, Schwerin once again became the undisputed center of Mecklenburg and the residence of its Grand Dukes at the beginning of the 19th century. Court architect Georg Adolf Demmler endowed Schwerin with many prestigious buildings.
