Lübeck, the former Hanseatic city, is without doubt the most beautiful and historic city in Schleswig-Holstein. With its beautiful old town and its seven church towers, Lübeck is a dynamic, lively and pleasant city. As the head of the Hanseatic League, Lübeck has enjoyed centuries of power and prosperity. And it did not hesitate to show it, building one prestigious monument after another. In 1987, this exceptional heritage was crowned with one of the most beautiful awards: Lübeck's old town was inscribed on the Unesco list. Its streets show a great variety of architectural styles, from medieval to classicism and from gothic to renaissance, testifying to its prosperity through the centuries. The city was partly destroyed during the bombings of World War II, but its center was relatively preserved, and for the damaged parts, the authorities have endeavored to rebuild stone by stone the beauties of the Hanseatic city. Lübeck is a large tourist center with many visitors during the peak season, a phenomenon that is all the more visible because the old town is small (about 1 km by 2 km). It is therefore more interesting to visit in spring or September.
