A visit to the magnificent town hall is worth the trip, as is a walk along the half-timbered houses, canals and well-preserved monuments. The architecture of the houses, most of which date back to the Middle Ages, is well worth seeing. It has become a weekend paradise for Hamburgers. And for good reason: it is ideal for sightseeing, strolling and café-going. Lüneburg is also the capital and gateway to Germany's largest historical heathland, the Lüneburger Heide. Lüneburg is the capital and the gateway to Germany's largest historical heathland, the Lüneburger Heide. The city is worth a visit if you choose the latter; if you are content with a city tour, half a day will suffice - the city is quite dead outside of the busy tourist scene.
