Gary is the embodiment of the 1980 crisis. It's a ghost town, where time stood still. The buildings seem to be slowly falling down. The walls crack, the wind rushes down desperately empty avenues. It's a journey far from the bustling Chicago. We meet the other side of the American dream: a population abandoned by industry and the government, a devastated city. Yet the city is famous for having been the birthplace of both Nobel Prize winner Joseph Stiglitz and the Jackson 5. Joseph Jackson, the authoritarian patriarch, worked in a local steel mill. The Jackson 5's group started out in the bars of Gary, before moving on to Chicago.
