Calumet is located in an area that, prior to 1803, was part of French Louisiana. Following the Organic Act of 1890 (an act used by Congress in preparation for statehood), the present county was officially settled in the Land Run of 1889 and 1892 and finally a land lottery in 1901. Calumet was incorporated in 1942 With less than 500 souls, Calumet is now a small town lost on the old Route 66 route of 1920-30 that connects to Geary, 12 miles to the west. Apart from being a necessary passage to continue its route, the town has no particular appeal.
