Situated on a cliff overlooking the Saint-Maurice River, the village of Grandes-Piles was the cradle of timber floating in the region, a prosperous trade that ceased towards the end of the 20th century. On the other side of the river lies Saint-Jean-des-Piles, one of the two entrances to La Mauricie National Park. To get there, follow Route 155 past the Grand-Mère area (named after a gigantic rock reminiscent of an old woman's head that once stood in the middle of the river). And don't miss the Village du Bûcheron, a lively historical re-enactment site that's sure to please the whole family.
