It was once called the City of Light because it provided almost all of the electrical power for the city of Montreal. The falls of the Saint-Maurice River were exploited for hydroelectric purposes in the late 19th century. They are impressive, especially in the spring when the waters swell. A single large municipality now unites Shawinigan-Sud, Grand-Mère, Saint-Gérard-des-Laurentides, Saint-Jean-des-Piles, Lac-à-la-Tortue and Saint-Georges-de-Champlain: Shawinigan. Its territory is home to La Mauricie National Park, a magnificent natural jewel, and the Cité de l'énergie, where science and local industrial history are combined.
