The capital of South Kivu province, Bukavu lies on the southern shores of Lake Kivu. With its 45 km2 and 900,000 inhabitants, it is one of the most densely populated cities in the DRC. It is built on five peninsulas backed by high massifs with lush vegetation. The result is a panorama of contrasting landscapes. With a hotel infrastructure of international standing, tourists can enjoy the scenery on the hills overlooking the coast. Bukavu has good Internet coverage and is accessible by air from Kinshasa or Kigali. Kiswahili is the language of communication. Lingala is also spoken.
