La Junta is a small town of recent foundation. Created in 1950, it now has just over 1,000 inhabitants. A strategic point between Chaiten and Coyhaique, this town was founded in 1963 by settlers who remained isolated from the rest of the world until 1983! Indeed, before the construction of the Carretera Austral, the inhabitants of the Junta had to travel to Argentina to replenish their supplies and this led to a strong cultural exchange which is still very present in the local mentality. You can visit Lake Rosselot and the National Reserve of the same name, the Lac Verde to the east (rafting and kayaking on the Figueroa River) or the picturesque fishing village of Raúl Marín Balmaceda, heading towards the fjords.
