The park covers 1,742,000 ha, making it the largest natural park in the Aysén region. Because of its natural resources, it was declared a World Biosphere Reserve in 1979 by UNESCO. It is located between the Exploradores River, the Baker River, Lake Carrera and the Gulf of Penas, making it the main gateway to the Northern Icefield. The relief of the park is characterized by several peaks, the highest in the southern Andes, including Mount San Valentín (4,058 m). The Campos de Hielo Norte, located in the park's territory, give rise to numerous glaciers. The best approach is a day cruise.
