This picturesque little village was founded in 1955 to exploit the Ciprés de las Guaitecas: a unique wood which, over millions of years, has adapted to the humid climate of the region. Caleta Tortel is famous for its houses connected by a system of wooden footbridges: the village is built on stilts, there are no roads, but many stairs! The whole area was declared a "Typical Area" in 2001. A stay in Tortel is an intoxicating experience in the heart of one of the most beautiful villages in Chile. There is not much to do, except to enjoy the surrounding nature and its architecture which takes us back to the time of the first settlers.
