There you are! Impossible to continue further south (by road, at least). This small village of 600 souls marks the end of the majestic Carretera Austral and the beginning of the southern ice fields. Located at the mouth of the Mayer River and Lake O'Higgins, the small village is one of the most isolated in Patagonia, left to an intact nature. Francisco Perito Morena explored the area in 1877, but it wasn't until 40 years later that the first settlers set foot here. It was established in 1966 and named after the hero of Chilean independence, Bernardo O'Higgins. The pueblito remained isolated for almost 50 years until the construction of the Carretera Austral finally reached it in the 2000s
