With a total area of 97 000 ha, Lake General Carrera is the second largest lake in South America after Lake Titicaca (Peru-Bolivia). It is shared between Argentina and Chile. On the Argentine side it has its name Lake Buenos Aires. The first settlements were Chile Chico and Puerto Guadal. In 1925 Puerto Ibanez became the port of Coyhaique on the lake. The traffic around the lake has only been possible for a short time. The road crossing the north shore of the lake was completed in 1988; that linking the El Maiten crossroads to Chile Chico on the south shore in 1991.
