In 1552, Pedro de Valdivia commissioned Don Gerónimo de Alderete to travel through the region in order to establish a town that would serve as a stopover on the way to the Cordillera. Alderete headed for the shores of a beautiful lake called Mallolafquén. He set up camp there and gave orders to build a town. In 1552 the fortress was given the name of Santa María Magdalena de Villarrica. During the sixteenth century, many religious communities settled there. Later on, the region suffered violent conflicts between conquistadors and Mapuches. Nowadays, Villarrica is one of the most popular areas for national tourism and remains quieter than Pucón.
