Located 258 km south of Santiago, Talca is the capital of the VII del Maule region. Its name means "place of thunder" in Mapudungun. Founded in 1692, the town collapsed almost immediately and was rebuilt fifty years later. Its official name was then Villa San Augustin de Talca. Bernardo O'Higgins signed the Act of Declaration of Independence of Chile in 1818. Terribly shaken by the 2010 earthquake, Talca is a useful base for exploring the Altos de Lircay reserve or discovering the little-visited coastline (epicenter of the famous earthquake), and for this very reason very authentic. However, Talca does not offer much interest in itself.
