Located 150 km from Madurai, the ancient citadel of the Chola dynasty is renowned for its profound wisdom from the Sangam Age (300 BC to around 300 AD). Situated on the banks of the Cauvery River, Trichy is a thriving commercial center of Tamil Nadu. Tiruchirapalli, as it is now officially known, is famous for its artificial diamonds, cigars, glass bangles and wooden and clay toys. The most prestigious site is the Rock Fort temple, a spectacular monument perched on a rocky outcrop that rises abruptly from the plain to dominate the old town. From its summit, you have a fantastic view of the city and its other main landmark, the magnificent Sri Ranganathaswamy (Srirangam) temple. Wrapped in a mist of coconut palms to the north, this temple is one of the country's largest and most exciting cultural complexes, built on an island in the middle of the Cauvery and covering an area of 2.5 km2. Another temple complex can be found nearby, the Jambukeshwara temple.
