population 107,000. Karaikudi is the main town in the Chettinad region. Built by the Chettiars according to the rules of the Vastu Chastra, it is one of the last towns in Tamil Nadu where vestiges of Tamil architecture and traditional spatial organization can be seen. It's also the most convenient point of access to the region. Chettiar handicrafts are well worth a visit. The region is nationally renowned for its handmade Athangudi tiles. Woodcarving, terracotta statues and processional carts are other Chettinad specialties.
