population approx. 140,000. 55 km southeast of Tiruchirappalli and 43 km north of Karaikudi. Pudukkottai is the capital of the district of the same name. This district, one of the former princely states of Tamil Nadu, has a rich cultural heritage with fortresses, palaces, temples, rock paintings and many other historical monuments. The city itself has few attractions, but it's a great base for exploring the surrounding area. Frequent bus services are the best way to get here, as trains are not very frequent. The Chennai Express runs via Pudukkottai (just over an hour's journey to Tiruchirappalli).
