Diu is an island of 40 km² located off the Kathiawar peninsula. To the east, it is home to the city of the same name (22,000 inhabitants, while the island has 44,000). An important commercial crossroads for the Ottoman Turks (from the 14th to the 16th century), Diu fell into the hands of the Portuguese in 1535, and it was not until 1961 that it became a Union Territory like Daman.Less friendly than Goa, Diu remains a pleasant stopover on the roads of Gujarat. The city offers a peaceful tranquility where it is good to stroll in the shade of its white churches and its colored houses. The beaches, without being unforgettable, allow to take a refreshing break. On weekends, beaches and resorts are taken by storm by a regional clientele in search of alcohol. Quietness gives way to lively and noisy evenings. Come during the week if you can to appreciate the old-fashioned charm of the place.
