Capital of Gujarat from the 2nd to the 4th century, the city owes its name to its citadel with its impressive architecture. The bazaar, too, is well worth a visit. But the main attraction is Mount Girnar, a hill sacred to the Jains. The climb is strenuous, but the temples are magnificent. On the way to the hill, be sure to stop and admire the Ashoka Edicts, carved into a granite block and dating from 250 BC. Here, the emperor inscribed moral lessons, recommending his subjects to respect women and animals. Sanskrit inscriptions also appear on the same stone. Junagadh is a pleasant escape from the tourist circuit.
