According to legend, the Somnath temple was built in gold by Somraj, the Moon god(soma), then rebuilt in silver by Rawana, the demon of Lanka, in wood by Krishna and finally in stone by Bhimdev. It was sacked in 1024 by an Afghan prince, Mahmud of Ghazni. Hindu-initiated rebuilding followed Muslim destruction. The present temple houses one of the country's twelve holiest jyotirlinga (a lingam of light, symbol of Shiva). Pujas are held at 7am, 12pm and 7pm, offering a spellbinding spectacle of spirituality. Numerous temples can be visited by auto-rickshaw in the surrounding area.
