Bangwa or Bangoua is a sleepy little rural village that, like many others in the region, lives mainly from agriculture. To open it up, it has become one of the obligatory bus stops between Yaoundé and Bafoussam. As soon as you stop there, you're besieged on all sides by vendors of all ages trying to sell travellers all sorts of local fruit and vegetables. Transactions often take place through the windows of the vehicles, giving rise to some particularly comical scenes. Bus passengers often take advantage of these stops (or passages) in the villages to stock up on agricultural produce, which is sold more cheaply than in the towns. So it's not uncommon to make the journey seated next to a bunch of bananas, a big bag of maize or cassava sticks freshly wrapped in banana leaves. The Bangwa chiefdom and the Macabo festival : Bangwa is a very small chiefdom, much less impressive than Bandjoun, but well preserved nonetheless, and still home to a small museum dedicated to the art and traditions of hunting. Every two years in November, it celebrates the macabo festival. Legend has it that this variety of tuber was the Bangwa chief's only source of sustenance when he was imprisoned by his enemies in Dschang: macabo was sent to him by a friendly chief from the village of Foto.
