Nkongsamba is about 130 km from Douala, on one of the country's main roads (towards Bafoussam). The road, recently renovated, still suffers from potholes and requires extra vigilance due to its condition and heavy traffic. For this reason, having a seasoned driver is a precaution to take for those traveling with their own vehicle. Hiring a cab is an option (it costs between 30,000 and 40,000 FCFA). Alternatively, getting there by bus from Douala's Bonabéri bus station (the journey costs 2,500 FCFA) is an efficient option. Many travel agencies in Douala offer excursions to the region to visit the crater lakes and the Ekom Nkam waterfalls, considered the crucial first stop on a successful trip to the West. Nkongsamba lies at the foot of the Manengouba mountains in a green ochre landscape. Here, you leave the hustle and bustle of the big city behind, never to find it again elsewhere along the way. It's a major coffee marketing center, a crop to which the town owes its 1970s magnificence. Some 150,000 people live here. Inhabitants of neighboring villages, such as Bangwa and Kékem, regularly bring in their harvests. The region's dynamic agricultural sector is the mainstay of Nkongsamba's activity, and its geographical position makes it a staging post between the West and the Littortal.
