Lantckhouti, straddling a hill and valley, is beautifully situated and from here the panorama of the Meskhétie-Adjarie range is superb. Curiosity, this is the centre of horse culture in Gourie. Many of the great Gourian horsemen were originally from this region, which was also the centre, at the end of the 19th century, of the stories of the Gourian desperados, these horse bandits in rebellion against the tsarist authority and curiously similar to their distant American cousins. At that time, the Gourie was a particularly poor and overpopulated region. Life there was probably gentler than in more developed but harsher regions.
