In the heart of the Mingrelian Piedmont, in the Abacha Valley, Martvili has everything from a Mingrelian village nestled in its countryside, with one of the most beautiful monasteries in Western Georgia. This small town is one of the most beautiful destinations in Mingrelia: it offers a beautiful landscape, traditional housing and a religious building worth a visit. The places on which the monastery is built were once a place of pagan sacred worship. An enormous oak tree was worshipped as an idol and symbol of prosperity and fertility. After the Christianization of Georgia, the tree was felled to end the cult. You can also visit the beautiful Marvili canyons nearby.
