The Nirkotsminda Church, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the pearl of church architecture. It symbolizes the golden age of Georgian history. Built in the 11th century during the reign of Bagrat III of Georgia, it was repaired in 1634 by King Bagrat III of Imérétie. The interior is richly decorated with 17th-century frescoes, one of the best examples of the late medieval period in Georgia. It is a narrative ensemble evoking episodes from the life of Christ: the Transfiguration, the judgment of Pilate and the Way of the Cross. Nikortsminda is situated between green hills, a landscape of vineyards and orchards, an hour and a half drive from Kutaisi.
