The last town in the Kartlie region, Sourami is at 740 m altitude at the foot of the Likhi mountain range, the famous natural "border" separating East and West Georgia. Pliny the Elder mentions as early as the 1st century the town of Sourioum, the last town of Colchide facing Iberia. It occupies a strategic position, at the junction of the roads between east and west. To the south, it is also the main access road to the Bordjomi Gorge. It was once a stopover for caravans travelling on the Silk Road. It was a city of merchants; its population included a strong Armenian and Jewish community. From the 12th century, the town was fortified, and until the 14th century it was the stronghold of the Dukes of Kartlie, who took the name Souraméli.Sourami benefits from the humidity coming from the west, which makes its climate healthy and its air particularly pure. It is a famous spa resort. One can stop here and visit its beautiful fortress, its Armenian church and its old streets, lined with terraced houses and gardens planted with vines. The original date of the construction of the fortress is controversial. It is thought that it was probably built in the 17th century. The neighbouring town of Borjomi Karaghouli National Park. It is very popular with tourists due to the variety of its landscapes and its many historical monuments.
