Lake Bazaleti is a low mountain lake, located at 900 m above sea level in the foothills of the Greater Caucasus, above the Georgian military road some 65 km from Tbilisi. It has a surface area of 1.22 km2 and a depth of about 30 metres. In Soviet times, it was a popular tourist resort for its clean air, as well as a medical centre dedicated to treating lung diseases. The resort fell into ruin during the 1990s, but recently a new tourist complex was built there. Large hotels, discos, restaurants, thalassotherapy centre, the place will not be very suitable for lovers of authentic Caucasian hospitality, but the complex occupies only a corner of the lake, where it is pleasant to swim in the summer. The lake again attracts tourist crowds for the therapeutic properties of its waters and its algae bordering its black sand beaches. Of course, the beauty of the setting is another reason for visiting the lake. In addition to its properties, the lake is special: an underwater current regularly renews its waters. One therefore always swims in pure water. Its origin has inspired several legends. According to one of them, it was born from the fall of a bull in a well. It was so big that all the water overflowed and gave birth to the lake. Other rumours say that the bull drowned in the lake and was found at the bottom of a well.
