Figueira da Foz (which means "fig tree of the mouth"), with its suspension bridge that connects it to the south coast on the estuary of the Mondego River and its waterfront, is a beautiful seaside resort. Its large beach is very well developed. It benefits from the benevolence of the Serra de Boa Viagem which protects it from the cold north winds by creating a favourable microclimate. A pretty promenade runs along the beach. You can take a short walk through the old town which comes alive during the day, or easily push to Buarcos, a small fishing village, 3 kilometers from the center of Figueira, following the Avenida do Brasil or even the beach.
