On the way inland to Coimbra on the N111, on a bank of the Rio Mondego, Montemor-o-Velho is an ancient and very powerful village in the middle of rice cultivation. It has a 9th century castle and the Romanesque and Manueline church of Santa Maria de Alcáçova, which has magnificent Moorish tiles. About fifteen kilometres from Montemor-o-Velho, on the left bank of the Mondego (N347, then N341 in the direction of Coimbra), you will reach the Reserva Natural do Paul de Azirla. It is an ecological reserve in a wetland area of 580 ha, home to wild ducks and chameleons. A 3 km walk along a path is offered to you
