The development of Borba is linked to the Reconquista. In 1217, Dom Afonso II built the castle there. Later, the city was included in the defensive line of the territory and in 1302 the walls were reinforced. The city played an important role during the 17th century, during the Wars of Restoration of the Independence of Portugal. The predominance of marble is explained by the presence of high quality quarries in the area. The Matrix Church (15th century), the Church of São Bartolomeu (16th century), the Convent of the Servas de Cristo (17th and 18th centuries) and the Bicas Fountain (18th century) are prestigious examples of its use
