Don't be intimidated by the industrial surroundings of this district capital on the banks of the Tagus. Founded in the 2nd century BC, this key city of the Reconquista saw its heyday in the 16th century, when the Tagus was one of Europe's most navigated rivers. From the very old fortress, take in the panorama after a stroll through its beautiful gardens. Inside its walls, the Igreja Santa Maria do Castelo features a small museum of sacred art. In the lower town, the Igreja da Misericórdia with its Renaissance portal is well worth a visit, as is the Convento do São Domingos with its beautiful 17th-century cloister.
